07-09-05 Social League Recap
Monday, 10 September 2007
The final league update -- next week is a tourney and the following is a partay. For now we can celebrate the end of Social League coaching!

Intro. Social league rolls in to September with a bang. Actually, numbers were a bit down last night, but that didn't stop those of us who turned up from having a blast. The coaching session worked on endzone plays -- the games were very high scoring as a result. That last bit may or may not be true. Let's get to the recap.

At the start of the coaching session, there were approximately 3 people who had played before at all. THere were probably 15 people who had either never played or who had played once. Excellent! SL prides itself on being the most inclusive league in Melbourne, and it did not disappoint. Of course, by game time, the usual suspects were out in force. See below for details.

This space has discussed gender ratios in the past, but last night proved to be off charts in terms of having women come down and play. Never before has anyone at SL uttered the words "we're out of blokes" only to hear "find your own blokes, don't steal ours" shouted from across the pitch. Several games actually played 4-3 with 4 women and 3 men. Furthermore, a handful of the women who turned up for training had left by the time games rolled around -- at the start of trainin, there were probably 15 women and 5 men. Maybe all of the women are preparing for the women's clinic on the weekend.

Women's clinic. (note: in this case "women's" means age 14+). There will be a clinic for women interested in learning about ultimate. It runs on Saturday 8 September and costs $15 (which includes lunch). There will be lots of players down at Albert Park for this one -- it's bound to be great. Email for details.

Presidential politics. You may recall that last week the VFDA had a presidential election. Reuben Berg won the election and presided over his first meeting as president. As the president is a paid position, YS wonders if Rueben's pay will be pro-rated to account for the fact that his term will only be 11 months rather than a year. If it is, will Matt Hui (VFDA vice president) collect the remaining 1/12? Will it remain in the VFDA coffers. Profound questions that probably wouldn't be asked if YS didn't stay on the ball!

Seriously. Congratulations Rueben. And with any luck, you'll get paid for the full year.

Coaching. Susan was in charge of coaching, but the bigger news was that 5 September saw the return of Michelle. Michelle is another ex-SLC (she was after Craig but before Mel, if YS has his history correct). She's had too much uni lately to make it down for SL, but she seems to have sorted out her priorities. The coaching focused on end-zone plays, and it started with the drill known alternatively as the "dump-swing" drill, the "end zone" drill but remains to YS "the most complicated drill ever." SLC would like to see a hammer drill or a power drill or maybe even a drill press.

  • LaTUF vs Nicky's 3-4 Split
  • Tall Tales vs The Imports
  • Michelle's Return vs The Spectaculars

LaTUF turned up as an entire team for the third consecutive week (this sentence all but writes itself). They faced one of the 4-3 women's teams with Nicky in charge. The latter was joined by a few juniors (who, incidentally, still have yet to pay for Social League) and an old hand or two. It's unclear who won the game, but the sport was the overall winner at the end. There's a cliche that hasn't been used by YS.

Tall Tales -- so named because of TMW, Alex and Tall Dave -- faced the Imports (Hamish, the captain, is an Import). Craig turned up fresh from a wine tasting and ended up playing opposite Tall Tales, which was against the spirit of the team. Still, his presence was more than appreciated on the undermanned Imports. YS has no clue who won or who played well.

The Return took on the Spectaculars with much gusto. By the time last point was called, the game had morphed into an all-in affair with HOS boys all over the place. Socialites held their own, no doubt, and they relished the opporunity to play with teammates of such high skill.

SOCIAL! Your imbibing scribe will take this opportunity -- just like last week -- to observe that Social League goes to the pub after league finishes. Every Wednesday. So when you're trying to sell someone on social league, make sure you emphasise the social aspects. The pub serves food.

This coming Wednesday, Social League will be running a tournament. Everyone is welcome to come down to play three shortened games and determine a SL champion. It will be a hat format, loosely based on where each player was born. The tournament will start promptly at 7PM, so please be on time. Actually, be early since all teams will be worked out then. Please email if you are keen to come along. Also email him any questions.

Coming next week. Social League has a champion, but what's the point of a social champion? Fame and fortune beyond your wildest dreams!

Email with anything that might be of interest.
