This coming weekend will see the first annual VFDA East vs. West Showcase Game being fought out at Elsternwick Park in Elsternwick. Teams of the best men and women players in Victorian ultimate will be competing for the Colliver – Normand Shield, named after 4 of the legends of Victorian Ultimate.
Date: Saturday March 21st 2009 Times: The game will start at 3pm, and will be wrapped up (including presentations) by just after 5pm. Where: South-west corner of Elsternwick park, near the corner of St.Kilda Street, and Joyce Street – Melway Map 67, E5
Elsternwick Park is a lovely venue (now quite green again due to the rain!), easy to get to via Public Transport, or on a bike, and there’s plenty of parking available if you plan to drive. You could bring down a picnic to enjoy during the game. It is fine to consume alcohol at the park during daylight hours, so feel free to bring down some wine or beer as well.
The Ormond Road shops in Elwood are a 5 minute walk away to get any supplies you may need. We will also have some basic snacks and drinks available to purchase during the match.
The Showcase Game is going to be an exhibition match of the highest quality, so this is the chance to invite all those people to watch this thing called Ultimate that you do (almost) every weekend.
Elwood beach is also a 5 minute walk away, so if it is a sunny day (fingers crossed) bring your togs and go for a dip after the game, before heading to the VFDA hosted party at the Grosvenor Hotel just up the road.
That’s right, a party! Here is the party information:
Grosvenor Hotel 10 Brighton Road, East St.Kilda (near the corner of Chapel Street and Grosvenor Street) Happy Hour is from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, and there will be finger food provided – so get there early! There will also be a VFDA Awards presentation to recognise achievements from the past year.

There are also some 7-11 type stores between Elsternwick station and the venue. Getting there: Elsternwick station, on the Sandringham line, is the closest train stop to the park. You could either catch bus 216 or 219 from the station and get off on New St, which runs alongside the park, or it is only a 10 minute walk to the park along Rusden St, over the Nepean Highway Tram #67 runs south from the city. Get off at the corner Glenhuntly road and the Nepean Highway, and walk straight down New Street (you will need to cross the highway first) for about 5 minutes until you hit the park. NB: the #67 tram stops right out the front of the Grosvenor Hotel, so you could catch it back up Brighton Road after the match
